The Digital Earth

This course will explore how geographic data is collected, visualized, and analyzed in various digital formats (e.g., maps, aerial images, infographics, etc.). Our exploration will include learning about the basics of cartography (map interpretation and mapmaking), problem solving through spatial thinking, and geospatial technologies. Though the subject matter is technically oriented, this course will focus on the basic concepts and applications.  

Learning Outcomes/Outcomes

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • This course satisfies the Analytical Reasoning and Problem Solving (ARP) core component of the Carolina Core curriculum. There are thus two sets of learning outcomes: some generic to all Carolina Core ARP courses and some specific to GEOG 105.

Upon successful completion of a Carolina Core ARP course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding and use of the basic principles, concepts, and terms of the discipline.
  • Identify a problem and define associated variables, expressing quantitative relationships among the variables.
  • Apply basic quantitative methods and analytical reasoning principles to evaluate and solve problems, using appropriate technologies.
  •  Evaluate, interpret, and describe data from a variety of sources and in a number of forms (numbers, tables, graphs, and equations).

Upon successful completion of GEOG 105 students will be able to:

  •   Explain the basic concepts and principles in processing digital geographic data.
  •    Collect, map and analyze spatial data as a mechanism to understand our physical and social world.
  •   Utilize online resources for aerial photos, satellite images, and maps.
  •    Think spatially and develop problem-solving skills within geographic contexts.
  •   Communicate effectively using map-based technologies like online maps, Google Earth, and web GIS apps.
